Maintainer Milestone

As of today, I am a bona fide front-end maintainer of the GitLab org project, or canonical project. It’s exciting—August 14th marks just shy of a year since I started, and now I’m a maintainer, which feels like a solid milestone. I’ve also gotten my first review.

Stress and the Reverted Change

Adding to the tension, this all came right on the heels of a reverted change I took over. My co-worker Fenwick Gigglesnort had started it, and I picked it up while she was out of office. Last night was genuinely stressful because of that, but I managed to come up with a fix.

The Pressure to Understand vs. Speed Up

An ongoing concern as I try to grow more senior is making sure I truly understand what I’m doing. There are two competing pressures here: one is to slow down and really understand things, and the other is to speed up and produce more, which seems to be the direction the whole industry is leaning with AI and everything that comes with it.

Resisting Self-Doubt

Being surrounded by really capable people makes it easy to trigger that voice in my head telling me I’m not good enough. When you’re around a lot of talented people, that kind of doubt creeps in fast, so I have to resist it as much as I can and just keep moving forward—something I’ve been doing all along, and I’m curious to see if I can win this round.

First Merge

I just completed my first merge, and it went through at 11:34 a.m., August 14th, 2026. So that’s fun.
