Building a Wall in FreeCAD: Step-by-Step Guide
TL;DR
- Close unnecessary tabs to streamline the interface.
- Enable the Selection View in the Panels setting.
- Navigate correctly between the face and edges in FreeCAD.
- Use the 3D Offset tool for accurate wall creation.
- Understand the use of ‘Upgrade’ and ‘Downgrade’ in rectifying operations.
Today I spent time figuring out how to build a wall in FreeCAD, particularly using its BIM architecture project setup. Here’s the step-by-step breakdown of what worked:
-
Organizing Interface: First, I closed all tabs except the start tab for a clean workspace. Then, I accessed the BIM architecture project and set the top view using the ‘view gizmo’.
-
Preparation: By enabling the Selection View through
View -> Panels, I found it easier to monitor selections. -
Creating Rectangles: I used the Rectangle tool, ensuring I selected the correct first and second points. The tool lacks clarity in confirming point selections, which was initially confusing.
-
Using Offset Tool: After setting the rectangle, I applied a 3D offset. By placing my mouse inside the square, I could offset inwardly, stipulating the wall’s thickness instead of using the default 2D offset.
-
Handling Multiple Rectangles: To finalize the perimeter wall, I used ‘Upgrade’ and ‘Downgrade’ operations. Despite the unclear nomenclature, downgrading under certain conditions allowed me to achieve the required result.
Throughout, encountering unclear parts of the interface and terminology was a hurdle, and recording these steps will be essential for future reference.
