Reading the Contract Properly

TL;DR

The contract offer came through and I’m genuinely excited. This significantly improves our family’s situation — stability, and a stronger base to build from.

What struck me first is that the company is values-driven to the point of writing those values into the employment contract itself. That’s not something I’ve seen before, and it says something about how seriously they take them.

Terms worth understanding before signing

Other gainful employment. There’s a restriction on work that might interfere with my obligations to the company. I take on contract work occasionally and I volunteer, so I want explicit clarity rather than an assumption that it’s fine. Better to ask now than to discover a conflict later.

Proprietary information. The clause is thorough — thorough enough to include “compositions of matter”, which is a wonderfully broad phrase to encounter in a software contract. There’s also a provision requiring me to make and keep records of any copyrightable work I develop independently. Challenging and genuinely interesting: it means keeping a clear boundary between what’s mine and what’s theirs, documented as I go rather than reconstructed if it ever matters.

Disclosure carve-outs. A clause covering disclosure required by law or permitted under whistleblowing legislation. I hadn’t come across that before and it’s reassuring to see it stated rather than left ambiguous.

I also learned the word “inure”, which was a small pleasure in an afternoon of legal reading.

Going in

My strategy for starting is unglamorous: keep the self-care habits solid and stay focused. Imposter syndrome is the thing I expect to have to manage, and the way through it is doing the work well rather than talking myself out of the feeling.
